The collaborations are usually structured in the following way: The research group develops basic knowledge, which is incorporated into the development of new products and processes at the company partner. During the entire cooperation there is a permanent exchange of knowledge, experience and questions between the partners. This type of research cooperation differs fundamentally from contract research.

The application for the establishment of a CD Laboratory is drawn up by the scientist in coordination with the company partner and submitted to the CDG General Secretariat. The laboratory management represents the respective university or non-university research institution.
